The Article

Your LinkedIn headline is the first thing recruiters see when they search for candidates. It appears next to your name in search results, connection requests, and comments you make. Getting it right can be the difference between being discovered or overlooked.

Why Your Headline Matters More Than You Think

Recruiters spend about six seconds scanning a profile before deciding whether to look closer. Your headline is prime real estate with 220 characters to make an impression. It also carries more weight in LinkedIn's search algorithm than any other profile section. If you want to show up when recruiters search for candidates, your headline needs the right keywords.

Skip the Job Title Only Approach

Most people simply copy their current job title into their headline. That's a missed opportunity. Instead of "Marketing Manager at ABC Company," try something that actually tells recruiters what value you bring and what you're looking for. Think about the problems you solve and the skills that make you stand out.

What Actually Works

Start with your specialty or the role you want. Add two or three key skills that recruiters in your field actively search for. You can include a quick win or achievement if space allows. For example, "Product Manager | Agile Expert | Led 5 Successful Product Launches" tells a much better story than just "Product Manager."

Research job descriptions in your target field. Notice which skills and qualifications appear repeatedly. Those are your keywords. Work them naturally into your headline without making it sound robotic or stuffed with buzzwords.

Format for Easy Reading

Use vertical bars or simple separators to break up different elements. This makes your headline scannable at a glance. Avoid using too many emojis or special characters that might look unprofessional or confuse search algorithms.

Test and Refine

LinkedIn shows you how many times you appear in searches. After updating your headline, watch this number over a few weeks. If it increases, your changes are working. If not, try different keywords or a new angle.

Your headline should evolve as your career does. Review it every few months to make sure it still reflects your current goals and the roles you want recruiters to contact you about. A strong headline opens doors. Make every character count.
